One Killed, One Wounded In Parade Shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP)-A gunman opened fire along a second-line parade route, killing one man and wounding another before a police officer shot him in the leg, authorities said.

Christopher Smith, 19, died shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday at a hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, chief coroner's investigator John Gagliano said. Police did not release the name of the 18-year-old suspect, who was listed in stable condition at a hospital late Sunday.

Police also did not release the name of the officer who shot the suspect. They said the officer would be placed on administrative duty until an investigation is complete.

Authorities said they believe Smith, who had been living in Dallas since evacuating for Hurricane Katrina, was the intended target. The second victim, a 37- year-old man, was hit in the leg by a stray bullet about a half-block away, police spokeswoman Jonette Williams said.

He was in stable condition at a hospital late Sunday, she said.

The second-line procession followed a jazz funeral.

Teen Charged In Fire Death Of Her Father,
An Off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer

PHILADELPHIA (AP)-The 13-year-old daughter of a police officer has been charged with his murder, accused of setting a house fire that killed him while he searched for her in the smoke, police said.

Tyrone Talington, 32, was found dead in the dining room of his home after a fire broke out in a row house in northeast Philadelphia early Sunday, authorities said.

Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said Talington's daughter apparently set the fire after a dispute with the officer. Investigators believe she poured "some kind of liquid" over clothes and paper and set it alight, he said.

The teen, seen running from the blaze, faces murder and arson charges, and will be charged as an adult, Johnson said. Police believe Talington was searching the house for the girl when he died.

"It's a very, very sad and tragic situation," Johnson said.

The one-alarm fire was declared under control in 11 minutes. Smoke detectors in the home were not working, fire investigators said.

U.S. Marshals Offer $25,000 Reward For
Capture Of Former Police Officer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)-Federal investigators are now offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a former Charleston police officer charged with killing his wife.

The reward was recently increased from $10,000 almost a year to the day the last time Daniel William Hiers, Jr. was seen.

Authorities have been looking for Hiers since he failed to surrender in Dorchester County on unrelated charges on March 15, 2005- the morning of the shooting.

Hiers' wife, Ludimila, was shot in the back of her head as she slept, authorities said.

U.S. Marshals think someone has information about Hiers. "Our investigation has developed information that Hiers received assistance from associates in the days following the murder of his wife," U.S. Marshal Johnny Mack Brown said in a release issued Tuesday.

Hiers is wanted for murder as well as first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and committing a lewd act on a minor.

Assault Charges Against Johnson Dropped

CHICAGO (AP)-Assault charges against Chicago Bears defensive lineman Terry "Tank" Johnson have been dropped after the police officer he allegedly scuffled with last month decided not to continue with prosecution.

Johnson was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest Feb. 12 after a confrontation outside a Chicago nightclub. The officer had been trying to issue a parking ticket for Johnson's vehicle, police said.

Johnson, 24, struggled with police before he was taken into custody, police said.

During a court appearance Tuesday, the officer did not give a reason for his decision to drop prosecution, Cook County's State's Attorney spokeswoman Marcy Jensen said.

Johnson's attorney, R. Eugene Pincham, said Johnson should not have been arrested for the incident.

In November, Johnson was sentenced to 18 months probation and 40 hours community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge. In that case, he was arrested after a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his sport utility vehicle.

Johnson was charged with violating his probation after the Feb. 12 arrest, but that charge likely will be withdrawn now that the assault charges have been dropped, Jensen said.

Against Owner

BOWDON, Ga. (AP)-A burglary at a hair salon has led to charges against the salon's owner after police found more than 200 pounds of marijuana stored there.

Bowdon Police Chief Mark Brock was on routine patrol early Sunday when he came across a burglary in progress at the hair salon.

The suspects, identified as Howard Bernard Crane, 20, and Kareem Lee Evans, 33, were trying to steal the marijuana, which was being kept in a freezer chest at the salon, police said.

The salon's owner-who is also Howard Crane's sister-Erica Crane, 33, was also arrested.

West Georgia Drug Task Force Agent Mike Fritz said Howard Crane was trying to steal the drugs from his sister's shop with Evans' help.

Student Arrested In School Bus Gun Incident

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP)-A 13-year-old student has been charged with firing six gunshots out the back of a school bus.

Campus police for the Savannah- Chatham County Public Schools charged the boy with multiple offenses on Thursday.

The bus was carrying about 90 students the afternoon of March 6, when a passenger began firing a handgun out a window.

Driver Michael Wright immediately drove to Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's downtown precinct. As Wright parked, a male passenger fled through the rear emergency exit. No one was injured. Authorities later found a freshly discharged handgun on the bus.

The arrested youth was not the one who fled, authorities said. Police made the arrest after receiving an anonymous tip.

Wright briefly returned to his bus driving job after the shooting. But he said he requested time off Wednesday so he could consider his options.

"(The incident) would have a lot to do with it," he said. "It's disturbing to have something like that happen."

School system spokesman Bucky Burnsed said the district is investigating how the teen got a gun into the Scott Learning Center. Students at the facility- an alternative school for suspended students or those returning from a youth detention center-are searched with a metal detecting wand each morning, Burnsed said.
