MABLETON, Ga.-Two
people were arrested and
more than a dozen dogs
and puppies were confiscated
after Cobb County police
raided a suspected dogfighting
operation.
Acting on an anonymous
tip Wednesday, they
raided a Mableton home
and found a blood-soaked
dog fighting pit in the
garage. Nearby they found dogs who showed scarring "consistent with dogs that have been fought and disfigured,"
according to the arrest warrants. The animals
appeared to be underweight and malnourished.
Leon Cecil Conley of Lithonia was charged with multiple
charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and dog
fighting, both felonies; and Joni Duran of Mableton was
charged with multiple
counts of misdemeanor
cruelty to animals, according
to the Cobb County
Sheriff's Office. Both are
being held without bond.
Police found the skull
of a dog at the scene, along
with other bones scattered
in the yard. They also found
hypodermic needles and "injectable veterinary solutions," such as antibiotics, and equipment used to train
fighting dogs.
Eleven full-grown dogs and four puppies were taken
to the Cobb County Animal Shelter.
